Mental Health

There are many reasons why you might feel low at some point in your life. Any event or experience could lead to sadness or mental health difficulties. Sometimes it’s possible to feel low without there being an obvious reason.

If you are in a mental health crisis or sharing ideologies indicative of suicide; contact 999 immediately.

If you are struggling with your mental health; please talk to a member of staff at School or visit the safeguarding office. The school has a dedicated Mental Health Lead, Ms E Lloyd-Hepden, who is able to provide pupils with support surrounding all aspects of their mental health and wellbeing.

 Emotional Wellbeing (Depression/Suicidal Thoughts/Low Mood)

When you are experiencing a low mood, some of the feelings may feel like: (not exhaustive list):

  • Sad, anxious or panicky
  • More tired than usual or being unable to sleep
  • Angry or frustrated
  • Low on confidence or self-esteem

A low mood often gets better after a short period however if this is on going for more than a few days; please talk to a family member or a member of staff at School.

We will talk through support and strategies which may be helpful for you in managing your mood.

Anxiety

When you are experiencing anxiety; some of the feelings may present like: (not exhaustive list):

  • A lot of negative thoughts, or keep, thinking that bad things are going to happen
  • Starting to avoid everyday activities
  • Feeling nervous, restless or tense, having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom.
  • Having an increased heart rate, breathing rapidly, sweating, trembling, feeling weak or tired
  • Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry.

Eating Disorders

People with eating disorders use disordered eating behaviour as a way to cope with difficult situations or feelings.

When you are experiencing disordered eating; some of the feelings may present like: (not exhaustive list):

  • limiting the amount of food eaten
  • eating very large quantities of food at once
  • getting rid of food eaten through unhealthy means (e.g. making themselves sick, misusing laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise), or a combination of these behaviours.

Disordered eating can have a serious impact on your physical health. We would encourage you to talk to a family member or a member of staff at School as soon as possible.

We will talk through support which may be helpful for you in managing your eating behaviours and feelings.

Bereavement

May feel like:
Grief is the response to loss, particularly to the loss of someone or some living thing that has died, to which a bond or affection was formed. May include changes in behaviours, lack of concentration or confidence, regression (wetting the bed, afraid of the dark) increased anxiety (separation anxiety) low self-esteem, mood swings, crying, angry outbursts, becoming withdrawn / isolated, sleep disturbances.
